چکیده

Recent investigations on the delay time of type Ia supernovae have set useful constraints on the progenitors of type Ia supernovae. Here we have calculated the evolution of close binaries consisting of a white dwarf and a main-sequence or subgiant companion. We assume that, once Roche lobe overflow occurs a small fraction of the lost mass from the system forms a circumbinary disk, which extracts the orbital angular momentum from the system through tidal torques. Our calculations indicate that the existence of circumbinary disk can enhance the mass transfer rate and cause secular orbital shrinkage. The white dwarf can grow in mass efficiently to trigger type Ia supernovae even with relatively low-mass (. 2M⊙) donor stars. Thus this scenario suggest a new possible evolutionary channel to those type Ia supernovae with long delay time ∼ 1− 3 Gyr. Evolving to Type Ia Supernovae with Short Delay Times

The single-degenerate model is currently a favourable progenitor model for Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). Recent investigations on the WD + He star channel of the single-degenerate model imply that this channel is noteworthy for producing SNe Ia. In this paper we studied SN Ia birthrates and delay times of this channel via a detailed binary population synthesis approach. We found that the Galacti...

The Effect of Different Type Ia Supernova Progenitors on Galactic Chemical Evolution

Aims. Our aim is to show how different hypotheses about Type Ia supernova progenitors can affect Galactic chemical evolution. Supernovae Ia, in fact, are believed to be the main producers of Fe and the timescale with which Fe is restored into the interstellar medium depends on the assumed supernova progenitor model. This is a way of selecting the right progenitor model for supernovae Ia, a stil...

The Redshift Distribution of Type-Ia Supernovae: Constraints on Progenitors and Cosmic Star Formation History

We use the redshift distribution of type-Ia supernovae (SNe) discovered by the Supernova Cosmology Project to constrain the star formation history (SFH) of the Universe and SN Ia progenitor models. Given some of the recent determinations of the SFH, the observed SN Ia redshift distribution indicates a long (>∼ 1h −1 Gyr) mean delay time between the formation of a stellar population and the expl...

The radial distribution of type Ia supernovae in early-type galaxies: implications for progenitor scenarios

We study the radial distribution of supernova Ia (SNe Ia) in morphologically selected early–type host galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and discuss its implications for the progenitor systems of SNe Ia. While new observations of earlytype galaxies suggest that they contain small fractions of young stellar populations, they are also the most likely hosts for long time delay SNe I...

Prompt Ia Supernovae Are Significantly Delayed

The time delay between the formation of a population of stars and the onset of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) sets important limits on the masses and nature of SN Ia progenitors. Here we use a new observational technique to measure this time delay by comparing the spatial distributions of SNe Ia to their local environments. Previous work attempted such analyses encompassing the entire host of each...
